The following properties and relationships are investigated for alcohol fuels and butanol: the influence of molecular oxygen on THC, CO, and NOx with MEXA-584L Otto gas analyzer (nondispersive infrared:NDIR), that simultaneously measures CO, HC, NOx, CO2, and air-to-fuel ratio (AFR).

Emissions formation and decay as a function of engine parameters, speed, load, intake temperature, EGR, and injection strategies are quantified. We determine the engine conditions that produce higher emissions during biofuel combustion.

Engine operation strongly depends on the biofuels’ ignition properties, composition, and chemical kinetics. The influence of air/biofuel ratios, air-intake boost pressure and temperature, engine speed and load, and ignition timing on ignition delay and heat release are investigated and their influence on torque and engine dynamics. We compare experimental results to classical models of ignition delay, combustion, and heat transfer.
