IT 3234 – Systems Acquisition, Integration and Implementation
This course provides a study of the software acquisition process, focusing on the use of packaged solutions. COTS (Commercial, off-the-shelf), SA-CMM (software acquisition, capability maturity model), ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), and BPR (Business Process Reengineering) will be discussed. The course will emphasize that the decision to purchase software does not mean that it is possible to skip the analysis and design phases of the systems development life cycle. This course is part of the IT core required for all IT majors.
Prerequisites (effective fall 2009)
A ‘C’ or better in IT 3233.
A ‘C’ or better in STAT 2231 or BUSA 3131.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Critically compare the advantages and drawbacks of purchasing software with the advantages and drawbacks of developing solutions from scratch;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the problems and challenges of acquiring, integrating and implementing a software package;
- Identify alternative packages that would satisfy an organization’s needs;
- Recommend one of the packages identified and justify their recommendation;
- Identify, analyze and resolve integration and implementation issues;
- Recognize the challenges (technical, managerial and organizational) of managing the change that an organization faces when it implements a new IT application;
- Recommend approaches to overcome these challenges.
