IT 5434 – Network Security Fundamentals

Course Description

This course is intended to serve the needs of individuals interested in understanding the field of network security and how it relates to other areas of information technology. The course will take a broad look at network security and provide the knowledge necessary to prepare students for further study in specialized security areas or used as a capstone course to those interested in acquiring a general knowledge of the field.

Prerequisites

A ‘C’ or better in CISM 3134 – Data Communications
A ‘C’ or better in IT 2333 – IT Infrastructure

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Name and describe network hardware and software components and their use in a network architecture.
  2. Design and build a local area network.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to replace, upgrade, and install network hardware and software.
  4. Diagnose problems in a network system and suggest solutions.
  5. Recognize security threats in an existing network and be able to offer solutions to mitigate or eliminate those threats.
  6. Evaluate emerging networking standards and explain how they would impact an existing network.
