Welcome from the Chair
Thank you for your interest in the ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering program at Georgia Southern University!
Mechanical Engineering is one of the three traditional pillars of engineering (with civil and electrical being the other two). Mechanical engineers are responsible for product design, mechanical and thermal analysis, and materials selection. They also design the equipment and facilities, oversee manufacture, and provide technical support.
Mechanical engineers conduct research in areas such as energy development and efficient usage, materials development, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and cooling), failure analysis, and mechatronics. In case you were wondering, mechatronics is an exciting fusion of mechanical and electrical control systems to solve problems in feedback controls, instrumentation, measurements, and robotics.
Why study Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Southern?
We pride ourselves on being applied, attentive, and accomplished. If you’re deciding between mechanical engineering programs, Georgia Southern’s mechanical engineering students do more than just read about theory. Beginning in your first semester you will gain hands-on experience in a studio or laboratory environment. Whether it be a fundamental lecture or a one-on-one research experience, upon completion you will feel confident in your abilities to help solve the engineering problems of the world.
Please take a few moments to review our curriculum and read more about us and the learning environment that we will provide for you. This is truly an exciting period at Georgia Southern as we continue to develop innovative ways to elevate mechanical engineering education to new heights.
If you should have any further questions, I invite you to call or email me personally. If you are not already here, I hope to see you on campus next semester.
