What is Big Data? Click to enlarge image. Big data is quickly becoming essential to everyday life. The ever-flowing stream of structured and unstructured data from social media, e-commerce, sensors and databases of all kinds has created significant demand for professionals with the specialized skills needed to analyze and manage this vast amount of data. By analyzing this exponentially growing source of information, we can test new tools, stay up-to-date on real-time data – and make the confident decisions that propel us forward.

As a data scientist, you will be the force driving our ability to use big data. Professional data scientists analyze an organization’s big data to discover trends and find meaning behind data so it can be used in everyday settings. These professionals advise executives on how to use big data discoveries to improve the business and integrate new trends. You will have the opportunity to display data visually and protect your organization’s data for consistency and usability.

Your Data Science Career Opportunities

A recent study by the McKinsey Global Institute states:

“The United States alone faces a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts to analyze big data and make decisions based on their findings.”

This shortage of talent means that data scientists will be in high demand for many years to come. Professionals with the specialized skills needed to analyze and manage the volume, variety and velocity of big data will command a high salary and enjoy a high level of job satisfaction.
